In 2012, Florian Payri stepped off the subway into lower Manhattan for the first time. He was on vacation, but he had just joined a small French company called ARISTID Retail Technology. Fourteen years later, now Co-CEO of ARISTID, Payri sat down with Supermarket News to trace that journey, from a pre-press agency producing in-store signage for French grocers to a platform he describes as the missing piece in retail's martech stack.
From Pre-Press Agency to Automation Platform
ARISTID was founded in the 1980s to prepare artwork and signage for French grocery retailers' weekly circulars, work that was almost entirely manual. When Rodolphe Bonnasse was brought in to lead the company, he recognized an untapped opportunity: doubling the volume of promotional content meant doubling the manual work, and every new channel meant redoing that work again from scratch. ARISTID calls this the multiplication of promotional workflows, one workflow per channel, and it remains, in Bonnasse's view, the old way of doing things.
His alternative was to produce the creative once, inside a dedicated promotional management and automation platform, and let the platform adapt it to the specifications of every other channel. That insight became ARISTID's first-of-its-kind automation platform, the foundation of the business today.
Fourteen Years, Two Roles, One Mission
Payri joined ARISTID that same year as a software engineer reporting to Bonnasse. Over 14 years, his role grew alongside the company's, and he now holds two executive positions: Co-CEO, overseeing day-to-day operations, and Head of Product and Technology, leading the teams that continue to build on a platform field-proven for more than 17 years. He also leads ARISTID's commercial expansion outside France, a mission that has brought him back to the United States, this time to bring European retail operational know-how to American retailers.
Proof in the Numbers
Payri has spent those 14 years working with the who's who of French grocery and pharmacy retail, and more recently with Portuguese, Belgian, Spanish and Canadian retailers in home renovation and sporting goods. Seven of ARISTID's customers rank among the top 50 global retailers.
The results speak for themselves. At Carrefour France, weekly circular production went from 10 versions to 1,600, as most of Carrefour's 6,000 stores now run their own localized flyer with local offers and pricing. At RONA, formerly Lowe's Canada, ARISTID's teams are building a Meta Advantage+ automation designed to multiply the retailer's weekly volume of unique promotional offers by 1,000x or more, with greater relevance to shoppers.
Four Pillars, One Missing Piece
ARISTID's approach to automation rests on four pillars: transforming legacy workflows, building a strong data foundation, creating automated production flows, and deploying the resulting offers on any channel. Together, Payri argues, these four pillars form a new category of software, one that connects and delivers what has long been the missing piece in many retailers' martech stack.
What's Next: Generative AI Meets Retail Know-How
For Payri, the rise of generative AI and large language models over the past two years is a natural extension of a platform ARISTID had already built the foundations for. He sees North America as the leading edge of that shift, and describes the moment as one where European retail expertise and technically sophisticated promotional execution meet the pioneering spirit of the American continent, adding generative AI capabilities on top of ARISTID's existing data and automation foundations to open new ways of producing and distributing promotional offers to shoppers.
Fourteen years after Payri's first trip to New York, ARISTID finds itself, once again, on the threshold of a new continent.
📆 On Tuesday, September 22, Supermarket News will also host a webinar to share how ARISTID works with major retailers in Europe. (2 p.m. ET / 11 a.m. PT)
